Comparing the EDGE Replay with the SkyCoach
Football instant replay systems have become more and more prevalent as technology pushes the sport forward. In the near future, you'll be at a significant disadvantage if you don't have replay on the sideline. With that said, there are a number of replay systems on the market to choose from. Today we'll compare Sport Scope's EDGE Replay with the SkyCoach. What are the major differences and what sets the two systems apart?
SkyCoach Needs Laptop per Camera Angle. EDGE Does Not.
With the SkyCoach you will need a laptop computer for each camera view. This is what performs the computational processing so that your antenna can send out the recorded clips to your iPad. These computers are not provided by SkyCoach. So you’ll be required to either use your own laptops or purchase new ones.
Moreover, you’ll also have to be careful that the computer you decide to use or purchase is compatible with the SkyCoach system. SkyCoach recommends a 64 bit Operating System with an i7 processor, 8GB of RAM, a Solid State Drive with 5GB of available storage per game, and a USB 3.0 port. Basically what all this means is you better have a good computer on hand, per camera angle. The cheapest option with these specifications will run you around $700.
The EDGE Replay, on the other hand, provides you with a custom-made capturing device that handles all the encoding and processing of video clips per angle. EDGE provides you with these devices as part of the system package. No need to worry about buying new computers or compatibility. No need to worry about getting your laptop wet in the rain. The handy EDGE box was designed from the ground up to record your plays and send to your iPad.
Network Setup Comparison
Both SkyCoach and EDGE Replay have a multipoint networking system that delivers iPad connectivity on both the sideline and in the pressbox. This is the best method of providing your personal Wifi network to all iPads connecting to the replay system in the stadium. EDGE Replay will be utilizing top of the line bridge and antenna technology by Ubiquiti for 2019, a leader in WiFi networking. No information yet on what type or brand of networking antennas SkyCoach will be using.
Power Requirements
For the SkyCoach, you will need to provide power to your laptops and the antennas per station. In the Pressbox this is usually not a problem. But for the antenna tripod on the sideline and the station in the Endzone, running an extension cord to get power is not always easy. SkyCoach does not provide you with an independent power source.
EDGE Replay has considered this difficulty. With EDGE, you’ll get a heavy duty portable battery for both the Endzone and Sideline stations. No extension cord necessary.
Furthermore, the EDGE box provides you with a HDMI pass-through so you can connect to your Endzone System’s monitor. With SkyCoach, if you want to use the monitor on your Endzone Camera, you’ll have to use a HDMI Splitter to accomplish this task. Another item that will most likely require power to operate.
Easy to Use Hard Cases.
EDGE Replay will be packaging all hardware equipment in three easy-to-use protective hard cases in 2019. These cases will serve as your plug-and-play stations for the endzone, sideline, and pressbox. Simply put up your antennas at each station, open the cases and plug in the relevant cords, and you're set to connect on an iPad and start recording replays.
SkyCoach does not package their equipment in individual protective carrying cases for each connectivity station on the field. You'll have to make sure each individual part is in the right place and hook up the old fashioned way and provide your own weather protection.
Wireless Smart Endzone Camera Integration
Once you own the EDGE Replay system it becomes seamless to upgrade to a Wireless Endzone Camera in the future because the Sport Scope App for EDGE also works with the Wireless Smart Endzone Camera. This allows you to control the Endzone Camera from your iPad and record your replays of the game at the same time. There's no way to seamlessly integrate this ability with the SkyCoach system.
