The Difference Between the EDGE Replay and the Hudl Sideline - Part III

The Difference Between the EDGE Replay and the Hudl Sideline - Part III

For the last two posts in this blog series we’ve been deliberating the differences between the EDGE Replay and the Hudl Sideline in all of their aspects. In Part I we reviewed the advantages and disadvantages between the two competitor’s video capturing devices: the EDGE box and the Teradek VidiU. In Part II we went into the discrepancies between the EDGE and Hudl hardware setup, software technology, and uploading processes. Today we will conclude the series by dissecting the differences in supported camera angles and the price.

If you currently own the Hudl Sideline and have been disappointed with the system be sure to check out our Replay Exchange Program. Send us your replay system and pay us your annual subscription fee and we'll give you the EDGE Replay in exchange.

How Many Angles are Supported?

The Hudl Sideline premium package supports two angles from real cameras (not your iPad’s camera). This is done by connecting a Teradek VidiU to each camera angle. The Hudl Sideline software does not currently allow more than two angles.

The EDGE Replay can support as many angles as you want from real cameras (not your iPad’s camera). This is done by connecting an EDGE box to each camera angle. The EDGE Replay software allows for well beyond two camera angles and allows all of them to be downloaded to the iPad simultaneously.

PROS & CONS

HUDL SIDELINE:

Obviously the disadvantage for the Hudl Sideline premium package is that you’re limited to only two camera angles. Although two angles works fine for most football programs, many are employing a third camera angle from the Pressbox. If you want to get instant replay on the sideline from this third angle and you have Hudl Sideline, then you’re out of luck.

EDGE REPLAY:

The EDGE Replay has the advantage in that you can connect as many camera angles as you want as long as you have the required hardware to add more angles. But, if you’d like to make that purchase for your third camera angle, then the option is there and it works just as flawlessly as the two-angle set-up.

Additionally, it should be noted that the EDGE Replay technology allows for all camera angles to be downloaded to the iPad simultaneously. So once the download is finished and you’re ready to view the replay, you’ll be guaranteed to have access to whichever camera angle you want to see immediately. No waiting for one angle to download, then the next, and then the next.

The Short and Long-Term Prices are Different

The Hudl Sideline first year price for the Premium Package hardware and software is $1,500. The annual software renewal fee is $1,500 for this tier. Hudl Sideline’s other tiers include a one camera angle and one iPad camera compatible angle (iPad not included) at $1,200, a one camera angle only at $900, and a one iPad camera compatible angle (iPad not included) at $500. All annual software renewal fees are equivalent to the year one hardware and software costs for that particular package.

The EDGE Replay first year price for the 2-Angle View System hardware and software is $1,999. The annual software renewal fee is $499 for this tier. The one camera angle only tier is $1,199 and the annual software renewal fee stays at $499.

PROS & CONS

HUDL SIDELINE VS EDGE REPLAY:

The Hudl Sideline has the advantage in a lower year one price for all package tiers. Hudl also technically has more package options available, although we question the viability of filming from an iPad. However, Hudl’s big disadvantage is in the long term. Take a look at the total cost differences after 5 years between EDGE Replay’s two and one angle systems ($1,999 and $1,199) and Hudl Sideline’s equivalent packages ($1500 and $900):

  • Total Cost After 5 Years – 1 Angle           EDGE - $3,195           Hudl - $4,500
  • Total Cost After 5 Years – 2 Angle           EDGE - $3,995           Hudl - $7,500

So although the EDGE Replay has a higher price point out of the gate, it’s long term pricing is considerably a greater value. Therefore, the question is would you rather win your exhibition games but not make it out of the playoffs? Or would you rather take a few hits in the early season only to dominate the playoffs at the end of the year? The choice is yours.
